Biography

Mary was born on 8 September 1870 at Pudasjarvi, Oulu, Finland.[1]

The 1900 Census lists Mary as arriving in this country in 1888. Family history has her arriving in this county at age 16. She traveled from her arrival location to Portland, Oregon.[2]

Mary married Jacob Laiti about 1890, likely in Portland, Oregon.[3]

In the 1900 Census Mary was living with the children in Carbonado, Washington. Husband Jacob was not listed.[4] On Dec. 9, 1899, there was a tragic mine explosion in Carbonado killing 34 men. Among those killed or injured were many Finns. Rev. J.J. Lundell, the Finnish minister, that later baptized Albert, tended to the needs of these people. There are detailed descriptions of life in 1900 in Carbonado. Meitzler (published by Heritage Quest Press, 1994)

In the 1910 census Mary (age 39) was the wife of Jacob Laite in Seattle Ward 10, King, Washington, with five of their children: Edward W., Willard Jacob, Paul D., Martha M., and Albert C.[3]

Mary and Jacob, and their four sons and one daughter were living at 4025 9th Avenue NE, Seattle, in the Ballard area, in the house that Jacob built, in the 1920 census.[5] Jacob died five years later in 1925.[6]

In 1930, Mary (59) was residing in the home of her son-in-law, Lester A Pelton, and her daughter, Malita, In Seattle with their daughter, Gloria, and Mary's son, William, and his daughter, Barbara.[7]

Mary, wife of Jacob Laiti, died on 3 November 1943 in Seattle, King County, Washington.[8] Obituary[9]
