Biography

Name

Born 1854 in New York City as Thomas H. LaVie. Family lore holds that he changed his name to Henry Thompson to avoid being found when he ran away from home sometime soon after 1870 following a dispute with his step-father, John D. Shute. Death

Headstone at Marion, Virginia
in Round Hill Cemetery.

Henry died on October 21, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His death certificate erroneously reports his date of birth as 1848. His remains were returned to Marion and he was interred at Round Hill Cemetery. His obituary was published in Marion:

Obituary
Thomas H (LaVie) Thompson

The remains of H.N. Thompson, a former citizen on Marion, who died in Cincinnati last Saturday, arrived here Monday and were taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Sprinkle. On Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock a short service was held at the house and the body conveyed to Roundhill [sic] cemetery where the interment took place. Mr. Thompson and family moved to Cincinnati about five years ago. He had been in failing health for several months, and died from a complication of diseases.

He had been married three times, his last marriage being to Miss Carrie Francis, who survives with five sons as follow: Harry, Dan, Roy, Dick and Olin, besides Mrs. Sprinkle who was borned [sic] to his first wife.

Mr. Thompson came to Marion from New York about 40 years ago, and was a saddle and harness maker by trade though before going to Cincinnati he was a traveling salesman for a rug and carpet factory.

Narrative

Henry is generally accepted by descendants to be the son of Spanish (Basque) immigrants. In the 1880 Census his and his parents birthplace are listed as Virginia. His brother-in-law, Charles Lewis was probably the respondent and may not have known the facts of Henry's background. His mother-in-law, Fanny Iron was the respondent in 1900 and reports Henry's birthplace as Porto Rico, his father's as Spain and his mother's as France. In 1910, respondent not indicated, his is New York and his parents are listed as “Spanish.” In 1920 his is listed as New York and both parents as Spain.
In the 1880 census his profession is listed as "collarmaker", a skill family lore holds he learned while working with the circus. He was a traveling salesman for a tack company in Knoxville and then a salesman for a carpet company while in Marion. Later he was a machinist, working for a tool company in Cincinnati.
The first written evidence we have of Henry is the 1855 New York census where he is listed as 1 year old "Thomas H. Levy". Though the spelling is different, due to the particulars there is little doubt that this is a good reference. In the 1880 federal census he is living at his brother-in-laws in Callands, Pittsylvania, Virginia with his first wife and one year old daughter. The family removed to Knoxville, Tennessee sometime before the birth of Effie in Feb 1881 where his residence is documented through a succession of City Directories through the mid 1890s. Sometime after the death of Maggie, his second wife, he relocated to Marion, Smyth Co., VA. In the 1900 census he and daughters Effie and Fannie are living with the widow Iron, Henry's mother-in-law. He married Carrie Francis September 1900 producing 5 sons between 1901 and 1910. Apparently Henry and Carrie took turns naming their sons. The second and fourth sons are simply named Dan and Dick without a middle name. The middle names of the other three are LaVie, Henry's birth name; Francis, Carrie's maiden name; and Erskine, Carrie's great grandmother's maiden name, tracing back to the Lairds of Erskine and other Scottish nobility. Clearly Carrie had a sense of her heritage and tried to preserve it through her sons. The family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in the teens and resided there until Henry's death in 1922.
After Henry's death Carrie alternated between Ohio and Marion, living with sons Olin and Roy in Ohio and step-daughter Effie while in Virginia. She died in October 1946 and is buried at Round Hill Cemetery in Marion next, to Henry, sharing a grave marker and adjacent to the Iron plot where his second wife, Maggie is buried.
