Biography

Childhood

The parents, John and Sabina Lehner were married at the Kohlsville Church (St. Johns) on June 18, 1855. They had 13 children together. Two of them died after only a few months. The information comes from the family history book:[1]

John C. Kohl married Anna Behling on October 26, 1879.
She was born in Pommerania, Germany, having come to America in 1877.
Moved to Marshfield in Spring of 1877 [does this mean they met and married in Washington County? or that John C. Kohl moved to Marshfield and met his wife there?]

Margaretha Kohl was born on Sept. 21, 1857 (or Sept. 20); and baptized on May 23, 1858.

Sabine Pauline Kohl was born on July 12, 1859 (given on confirmation record, no record of her birth at St. John's).

He died on August 22, 1863 at the age of 4 months, and 2 days.

Married Life

On October 26 1879 John Christopher Kohl and Anna Marie Behling were married in Chili, Wisconsin in the home of her parents located there, Wisconsin.[2]

His wife, Anna Marie Behling was the child of Karl Friederich Behling and Anna (Gustina) Retzlaff. She was born on September 1, 1857 in Schivelbein, Pomerania, Germany. She was baptized on October 15, 1857 and confirmed on Palm Sunday 1872 in the protestant church in Schivelbein, Pomerania. She and her parents came to the US in 1874. She was described as a casual housekeepter who was different than her comtemporaries. She had goals and objectives that were "classic blue blooded." She enjoyed music a great deal.[3]

He and Anna Marie had several children that included: [4]

  • Leopold Henry Kohl, August 3, 1893, d. June 26, 1946
  • Elsbeth Kohl Carlson, b. November 16, 1897, d. August 20, 1924


Death

John Christopher died on February 5, 1932 at the age of 76 in Marshfield, Wisconsin.
