Sister Hilda Mary Knox was born in 1884 at Benalla, Victoria (Australia). She was the second daughter of James Knox and Mary Barlow. [1]
On 21st November 1914, Hilda enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service as a Staff Nurse (Lieutenant). [2] She embarked for overseas duty with the 1st Australian General Hospital (AGH) on 5th December at Melbourne aboard HMAT Kyarra A55. [3] The 1st AGH was based at Cairo, Egypt, before being moved to Lemnos Island, nearer Gallipoli. The hospital was later deployed in France, on the Western Front. She was promoted to Sister (Captain). Following a voyage to Australia accompanying repatriating soldiers, Hilda re-embarked for overseas duty with reinforcements for the 14th Australian General Hospital at Melbourne on 19th August 1916 aboard HMAT Karoola A63. [4]She passed away of cerebral disease, aged 33 years, on 17th February 1917 at Rouen, France and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Haute-Normandie, France. Hilda Mary Knox's name is located at panel 188 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. [5] She was posthumously awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal.
