Biography

Mary (Knoeppel) Menge has German Roots.

Maria (Mary) Knoeppel was born 3 Jun 1833 in Mecklenburg, Germany.[1] A birth record was found for Marie Sophie Charlotte Knuppel b.3 Jun 1833, bap.4 Jun 1833 in Brüz u Groß Brütz, Mecklenburg, dau of Peter Knuppel and Marie Knuppel.[2] Her headstone shows her date of birth as ___ ___ 1833 (date is illegible in photograph).[3]

"Marie Knuppel", age 20, departed Hamburg, Germany aboard the "Marchioness of Queensbury", arriving 4 Aug 1854 in New York, New York.[4] She traveled to America with her mother.[1]

Mary and Carl W Menge were married on 3 Apr 1855 in Clayton County, Iowa by John P. Kreibs, Justice.[5] Census records and Mary's obituary show that Charles and Mary had eleven children:[1][6][7]

Mary was named administrator of her husband's estate on 11 Nov 1898 in Clayton County, Iowa, with her sons, Louis and August, as sureties.[8]

Mary Menge died on 7 Apr 1904 and was buried at Mount Harmony Cemetery, Elkport, Clayton County, Iowa.[3][9]

Possible dates of birth/baptism and parents names:

Maria Eva Knoepple, b. 26 Feb 1833, father: Joseph Knoepple, mother: Eva Margaretha Steinbacher, christening date: 27 Feb 1833 at Lingenfeld, Pfalz, Bayern.[15] There isn't enough info to positively link these parents/dates to this Mary Knoeppel, also Lingenfield is about 800 km from Mecklenburg.
