Biography

I have seen Mary's maiden name as Kitson in earlier records and Kitchen in later records. Kitson seems to be the more traditional spelling in Ireland, so that is the spelling I went with.

Her parents were Henry Kitson/Kitchen and Margaret Honan. From Mary's marriage to John Holohan, the family was from County Clare, Ireland. ^[1]

Mary Kitson married John Houlihan on 18 February 1855 in Wildfield, Peel, Ontario, Canada. Witnesses were Mary Kitchen and John Hogan.^[2]

By the 1860 US Census, Mary and John are living in the Niagara, New York area with their family. At the time of their deaths, John and Mary were living at No. 1155 Fairfield Ave in Niagara Falls, New York. ^{[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]}

Mary's obituary was across three columns in the Friday, March 22, 1912, edition of the Niagara Falls Gazette. -

Mrs. Holohan, old resident, is dead

Mrs. Mary Holohan, for more than 50 years a resident of this city, died at the home of her son, Michael Holohan, No. 1155 Fairfield Avenue yesterday afternoon after a short illness.

Mrs. Holohan was ill less than two weeks, her extreme old age being responsible for her death. Deceased was about 75 years of age.

The funeral will be held Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the house and at 9 o'clock from the Church of the Sacred Heart. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mrs. Holohan is survived by two sons, John and Michael, and one daughter, Nora Holohan; one brother, Michael Kitchen, and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Donohue, Miss Bridget Kitchen and Mrs. James Carmody, all of this city.
