Biography

Jethro was born in Edgecombe, North Carolina with an estimated birth year of 1770. He was the son of Boaz Kitchens and Mary McCabe.

The original will of Boaz Kitchin was dated 2 June 1767 and he named his "three sons," none of whom was named Jethro. In August 1772, witnesses stated that Boaz had given "absolute gifts" to his son Jethro Kitchen and to one of his daughters and wished that information to be attached to his will. On 28 September 1772, a different witness submitted a similar statement about the same gift to Jethro (a three-year-old enslaved child named Buck), and stated that Boaz had died on that same day. This shows that Jethro was born between June 1767 and August 1772. [1]

In her will, proved in 1785, Jethro's mother Mary Kitchen left him the following bequest: "I gave unto my beloved son Jethrow the planation one cow and calf one [---] one case of bottles to him and his heirs [--- ---].[2]

In May 1788, the following entry appeared in Edgecombe, North Carolina court minutes: "James Weeks is appointed Guardian to Jethro Kitchen, Orphan of Boz Kitchen dec'd, he ent'd into Bond for his Guardianship, of 600 pounds with Presley Spinks Security."[3]

In August 1788 in Edgecombe, North Carolina court minutes, the following entry appeared: "Jethro Kitchen orphan of Booz Kitchen came into Court & chose William Hackney Guardian who entered into Bond of [500 pounds] with Booz Kitchen & Presley Spinks Securities." [4]

On 3 June 1791, in Edgecombe, North Carolina court minutes, the following entry appeared: "Amount Current returned by William Hackney ag't Jethro Kitchen, Orphan of Booz Kitchen - which was allowed." This brief entry is ambiguous, but is likely to indicate that Jethro had reached age 21 and his guardianship had ended.[5]

Jethro died intestate in 1795 in Edgecombe, North Carolina. The probate case file stated that he had no wife and no children.[6]
