Original Settler of Mound Bayou
Private Mack Kitchen served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Nov 13,1863
Mustered out: Jul 7, 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Co E, 63rd Regiment U.S. Colored Infantry

Mack Kitchen was born on January 20, 1843. The 1900 and 1910 Bolivar County, MS censuses show he was born in Alabama; however, his Civil War Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR) shows, Mack Kitchen, age 40, 5 feet 8 inches tall was born in Monroe County, Mississippi.[1]

He enlisted in Company E of the 9th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, African Descent (later the 63d Regiment, US Colored Infantry) on 13 Nov 1863 at Vicksburg MS and was discharged on 7 Jul 1865 due to a disability. He appeared on a Muster Out Roll in Devalls Bluff, Prairie County, Arkansas on 9 Jan 1866.[1]Note: The U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865, shows he enlisted on December 14, 1863 in Memphis, Tennessee.[2] Mack's name is inscribed on The African American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C., as part of the 63rd Regiment, United States Colored Infantry on plaque number C-73.[3]

On March 7, 1868, Mack was listed in the Bounty Record book for Bounty claimants in Vicksburg, Warren, Mississippi. He received a $200.20 bounty.[4]

In 1874 Mack was again included as a "witness" to vouch for the identity of a fellow soldier of Company E, 63rd USCI in Natchez, Adams, Mississippi, United States.[5]

Mak Kitchen vouched for the identity of Lewis Parks of Company E, 63rd USCI in his claim filed for a Civil War Bounty on June 23, 1878 in Vicksburg, Warren, Mississippi, United States.[6]

In the 1900 census, Mack (age 66) was the married head of household in Bolivar, Mississippi, United States.[7]

Mack received a Civil War pension on April 29, 1907 in United States.[8][9]

In the 1910 census, Mack (age 67) was the widowed head of household in Beat 3, Bolivar, Mississippi, United States.[10]

Mack's died on August 7, 1915 in Mound Bayou, Bolivar, Mississippi, United States, aged about 80. [11]

Mack was buried in Mound Bayou Cemetery, Mound Bayou, Bolivar County, Mississippi, United States with a death date of August 8, 1915.[12]

Research Notes

  • Mack Kitchen's name did NOT appear on the 1937 list of Founders and Early Settlers of Mound Bayou (1887 - 1890), but his name does appear on the list for 1887 - 1900 published in 1987 and the list for 1887 - 1903 published in 2018. This could imply that he did not arrive in Mound Bayou until sometime after 1890.
  • No record has yet been located for Mack prior to 1900 but clues for the search are
    • in Monroe County, MS where his CMSR record states he was born;
    • in Warren County MS where Freedmen's Bureau records hint he was located at Davis Bend in the 1870s;
    • in Prairie County, Arkansas where his CMSR record suggests he was when he was discharged in 1866. (This is somewhat supported by the census records showing his grandchildren were born in Arkansas.)
