David D Kirkpatrick fought for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The Kirkpatrick Family History states he joined the Seventh AR Infantry. During the course of his service he was promoted to sergeant. According to war records, David was 5 feet 11 inches tall and had dark hair and dark complexion. In 1865, at the end of the war, he was paroled and discharged at Jacksonport, AR.
We did further study and found the following: David D. Kirkpatrick enlisted in Pochontus, Lawrence Co., AR on March 13, 1862. He was in Company E which subsequently became Company G, Turnbull's Battalion, 25th AR Infantry as a Private for Captain Turnbull for 12 months. The Union held him a prisoner of war and later was pardoned at Jacksonport, AR.
During the company muster roll for March 13 through April 30, 1862, it was stated he was at the hospital in Memphis, TN. Sick.
During the company muster roll for January and February, 1863, it was stated he was last paid on August 31, 1862 and during February and February, 1863 he was absent without leave. During the company muster roll for May and June, 1863, it was stated he had deserted his company. (mgp) I believe D.D. Kirkpatrick was absent without leave because he joined another company, listed below:
The Forty-Fifth AR Confederate Cavalry: There is little information available about the Forty-fifth, Colonel Milton Baber, a member of Colonel R. G. Shaver's Thirty eighth AR Confederate Infantry, raised the unit in the last summer and fall of 1864. The most notable event in which the 45th participated was General Sterling Price's Raid in MO in the fall of 1864. Colonel Baber was captured during the expedition at Independence MO. and Colonel J.W. Clark assumed command. It was Colonel Clark who surrendered the unit in June, 1865. Most of the compiled service records contain only one card extracted from lists of men paroled at Jacksonport, AR on 5 June 1865. Ages and birthplaces listed in this roster are from the extracts of paroled solders and are probably the ages as of June, 1865. This information was taken from the Microfilm Publication Number 317 and from the introduction of the Roster of the 45th Cavalry, by Desmond Walls Allen of AR Research. The Roster - These men were enlisted in Lawrence Co, Powhatan or New Hope Church.

Looks as though David Kirkpatrick probably served in up to three companies. This was not uncommon.
According to census records he was always listed as a Farmer but Church records from the Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Christ indicate that he was very active in the church and on June, 1873 served on a committee "to see after the welfare of the Church" he was mentioned as Bro. D. G. KIRKPATRICK was one of the names appointed to investigate the difficulties that existed between two church members and to report accordingly. On June, 1878, the church records state "On motion of the church set apart Brother D. D. KIRKPATRICK to exercise his gift for preaching." Seems he became a Baptist Pastor for the same Cedar Grove church which is located near the Independence & Sharp Co. border near Batesville, Independence Co., AR from 1878 until his death. In July, 1886, George W. JAMES was ordained to preach and on Aug, 1886, the minutes show that Geo. W. James was elected pastor so perhaps David died shortly before July, 1886.
