Biography

Edmund Kirby was born on Sep 13, 1839 in Holton, Aroonstock County, Maine. He in Tennessee on Sep 23, 1863.

Parents: Reynold Marvin Kirby and Mary (Barclay) Kirby (1811–1891)

Edmund graduated from VMI in 1861. After serving as drillmaster for several units, he entered the 58th North Carolina Infantry in 1862 as adjutant as well as drillmaster. He was promoted Lt. Colonel a few days before his death at the Battle of Chickamaugua.

Originally buried on the battlefield, he was disinterred, and reburied at Shockoe Hill on 30 October 1863. He is buried in the same grave as his brother Reynold, an artilleryman (Richmond Howitzers, 2nd Co.) who died 30 July 1861 of disease.

Their grandfather Col. Ephraim Kirby of Litchfield, CT, had served in the Revolutionary War and earned distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Their father Reynold Marvin Kirby was a decorated War of 1812 veteran, and for many tears commanding officer of the 1st U.S. Artillery. Major Kirby died in Fort Sullivan, Eastport, Maine in 1842, at which time Edmund and the rest of the family moved back to Richmond.
