We have to announce the death of the Hon. T. W. Fitzwilliam, of Milton Ferry, Peterboro’, which took early on Monday morning at Wentworth Woodhouse, the seat of his father, Earl Fitzwilliam. Mr. Fitzwilliam had been ill for some weeks past, suffering from septic fever and disease of the valves of the heart. The deceased was born in 1846, and was educated at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge (B.A. 1865). He served in the 10th Hussars, and afterwards entered the Royal Horse Guards as a lieutenant. Later he married, in 1876, Miss Jessie Gordon, Elgiva Mary Kinglake, daughter of Dr. Hamilton Kinglake, of Taunton. He came to Peterboro’ the following year, and acted as steward for the estates of his cousin, Mr. G.C.W. Fitzwilliam, until the coming of age of the latter in 1887. He succeeded the Marquis of Huntley as Master of the Fitzwilliam Hounds, and a handsome present was made to him on retiring from that position by the members of the hunt. His wife died in 1886 at Wentworth Woodhouse, while on a visit there. Her loss was not only very keenly felt by her husband, but also by many residents in the Peterboro’ district where, assisted by her husband, she organized various entertainments to assist many local and district charities. An orphan daughter, Eltrevor, alone survives her parents. She is eleven years old. There had been two other sons but both died quite young. In 1888 the deceased contested the Castor division for the Peterboro’ County Council, and beat his opponent, Major White, by 3 votes. He also filled several other public offices in the locality. He was a keen sportsman, and was one of the stewards of the Jockey Club. As a mark of respect the flag at the Peterboro’ Guildhall was floated half-mast high. The members of the Fitzwilliam family present at Wentworth Woodhouse at the time of the death of their relative included Earl Fitzwilliam, Lady Mary and Mr. Boscawen, Lady Alice Fitzwilliam, Lady Albreda Fitzwilliam, Lady Charlotte Fitzwilliam, the Hon. Henry Fitzwilliam, and Lady Mary Fitzwilliam, the Hon. Charles and Mrs. Charles Fitzwilliam, the Hon. Hugh Fitzwilliam, the Hon. Reginald Fitzwilliam (brothers and sisters), Miss Kathorn Fitzwilliam (daughter), Lord Milton, M.P., and Misses Fitzwilliam (nephew and nieces), Mrs. Harford (sister to the late Mrs. Thomas Fitzwilliam), and Admiral Douglas (uncle). – The funeral takes place to-day (Thursday) at the parish church of Marholm, near Peterboro’, where the Fitzwilliam family vault is and where also his wife was buried.

The death of poor little Godric Fitzwilliam, recorded in last weeks issue of the Herald, must have been a sad blow to both the families of Fitzwilliam and Kinglake, and all must sympathise with them, and with none more than our neighbour the doctor. Diphtheria is a terrible complaint, and I cannot help reflecting that if a healthily situated mansion like Wilton House is unable to escape its ravages how much less chance have humbler and less salubrious dwelling-places. All the more careful, therefore, should be our sanitary authorities in removing the defective drains and other nuisances, in which such infections maladies have their main origin.
