Philip King was born on 22 May 1760 at Louisa County, Virginia Colony.[1] He was a son of King-16843|Thomas King]] and Tillah (White) King.[2]

He was a soldier of the American Revolution.[1] He entered the service in 1780 as a Private in Colonel Thomas Gaskins' regiment of Henrico Militia. After about three months, he entered service in Goochland County, attached to the 14th Virginia Regiment, as a Corporal under Captain Lovely, commanded by Colonel Thomas Posey. He was taken prisoner but escaped and rejoined Colonel Posey's regiment. He participated in the Siege of Yorktown, in daily skirmishes (28 Sep - 19 Oct 1781). In 1782, he marched with General Wayne's army to Georgia to combat the Creek Indians.[3] (Corporal Philip King is also found on a 1782 roster of the 7th Virginia Regiment.[4]) He was allowed a pension for his service.[5]

After the war, Philip moved about Virginia and Tennessee:
