Biography

Birth

Merrill James Kidder was born at Alstead, New Hampshire, on 4 Feb 1844, the son of James Alexander Kidder and Susan P. (Washburn) Kidder.[1] He was living with his parents at Alstead in 1850 at the age of 6[2] and in 1860 at the age of 16.[3]

Marriage

Merrill James Kidder married Caroline Mary Ann Kidder at Marlow, New Hampshire, on 18 Mar 1869.[1] They were third cousins, both great-great-grandchildren of James Kidder (1700-1755) and Abigail (Whitcomb) Kidder (bef.1714-).
In 1870, Merrill Kidder, farmer, and Caroline E. Kidder, both 26, were living at Alstead.[4]
In 1880, Merrill J. Kidder, farmer, and his wife Carrie M. Kidder, both 36, were living at Alstead.[5]
In 1900, Merrill J. Kidder, 56, born in February 1844, farmer, and his wife Carrie M. Kidder, 56, born in April 1844, were living at Alstead with their son, Wilfred J. Kidder, 26, born in July 1873. The census shows that Carrie had been the mother of two children, both of whom were then living.[6]
Merrill and Caroline Kidder moved to Keene, New Hampshire, about 1907.[7] In 1910, Merrill J. Kidder, 66, farmer, and his wife Carrie Kidder, 65, were living at Keene, and the census shows that Carrie had been the mother of two children, both of whom were then living. Also in the household were their son, Wilfred Kidder, 36, locomotive shop machinist, and his wife, Mertie Kidder, 26. The census shows that Wilfred and had been married for nine years and that Mertie had been the mother of one child, who was no longer living.[8]

Widower

Caroline (Kidder) Kidder died from cancer at Keene, New Hampshire, on 30 Dec 1916.[7]
In 1920, the widower Merrill J. Kidder, 75, was boarding at Keene, New Hampshire, in the household of his brother-in-law and sister, George E. Newman and Abbie Maria (Kidder) Newman.[9]
In 1930, the widower Merrill J. Kidder, 86, was living with the family of his son Herbert L. Kidder, 52, at Winchendon, Massachusetts.[10]

Children

Merrill and Caroline (Kidder) Kidder were the parents of two sons, both born at Alstead, New Hampshire:[1]
  1. James Wilfred Kidder, born on 3 Jul 1873
  2. Herbert Lewis Kidder, born on 15 Mar 1878
Neither of these sons were recorded living with their parents in the 1880 Census, nor has any other record been found of them in that census.

Death

Merrill James Kidder died at Winchendon, Massachusetts, in 1932.[11] The gravestone of Merrill J. Kidder at the East Alstead Cemetery in Alstead, New Hampshire, is inscribed with the dates 4 Feb 1844 and 7 Nov 1932.[12]
