General William Scott Ketchum was the son of David Ketchum and Rebecca Hill.

Life

William Ketchum was born in 1813.

William served in the military.[1]

W married Anne P McMullen on 4 August 1840 in Tallahassee, Leon, Florida, United States.[2][3][4][5]

Wm married Rebecca O White on 25 February 1846 in Pulaski, Arkansas, United States.[6]

Rebecca and Ann were sisters.

William and Rebecca had one child together, James D. Ketchum.

In the 1860 census William (age 46) was in San Diego Township, San Diego, California, United States.[7]

William died on 28 June 1871 and was buried in Washington, District of Columbia, District of Columbia, United States.[8]

William's son Charles Leavenworth Ketchum died on 21 March 1918 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States.[9]

1871-Jul-17. "THE POISONING CASE. Action of the Grand Jury - Presentment of Mrs. Wharton for the Murder of General Ketchum, also for Attempt to Poison Mr. Van Ness. Mrs. Wharton committed to Jail - The Testimony in the Case - Statement of Deputy Marshal Frey. ...
"In the Criminal Court on Saturday, the grand jury made the following presentments:
"The grand jury & c., do present Elizabeth G. Wharton for willfully, feloniously and with malice aforethought killing and murdering Gen. Wm. Scott Ketchum, of the United States army, by administering to him tartar emetic or some other poisonous drug, on or about the 29th of January, 1871." [10]

Edith was later aquited.[11]

“Mrs. Wharton was tried and found not guilty on January 24, 1872. General Ketchum’s remains which were buried in Rock Creek Cemetery, Georgetown, D.C. were twice exhumed and examined by various medical authorities who testified for the state.” per pg. 264 of the book Generals in Blue Lives of the Commanders by Ezra J. Warner.
