Hiram Thomas Kester was born 01 Mar 1841, in Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio. He is a son of Peter Kester Jr. and Elizabeth Frank.

During the Civil War, Hiram enlisted on 22 Sep 1861, serving with the Fifth Ohio Battery Light Artillery. On 06 Apr 1862, Hiram was wounded during the battle at Shiloh. He began as a Private, he was a Corporal when he mustered out. Hiram was discharged on 22 Sep 1864.

He married Rebecca Elizabeth Secrest, 14 Sep 1865 in Coldwater, Mercer County, Ohio.

Hiram passed away 21 Sep 1909, Menlo, Guthrie County, Iowa. He is buried in the Menlo Cemetery, Menlo, Guthrie County, Iowa. ^[1]
