William Kerr was born about 1720, probably in Scotland. This estimate is based on the age of his wife, who was born in 1724.^[1]

William Kerr married Alison Cowe. They lived at Oldcambus in Cockburnspath parish, and had (at least) eight children:

• Alison Ker, baptised on January 22, 1747 in Cockburnspath, Scotland. The baptismal witnesses were David Cowe and John Coltherd.^[2]
• John Kere, baptised on March 5, 1749 in Cockburnspath, Scotland. The baptismal witnesses were David Cowe and David Cowe (undoubtedly Alison's father and brother).^[3] John probably died before 1755, as the name was reused.
• Isabel Kere, baptised on April 7, 1751 in Cockburnspath, Scotland. The baptismal witnesses were David Cowe and John Kere.^[4]
• David Kere, baptised on April 1, 1753 in Cockburnspath, Scotland. The baptismal witnesses were David Cowe and John K.. (the page was torn at this point).^[5]
