Ruth Helen Kerly was born in London in 1916. [1]
She was the daughter of Frederick Gyles Kerly and Ada Martha Edwards.
In 1939, she was a shorthand typist, living with her widowed mother, sister and aunt at "Thorley", Avondale Avenue, Esher, Surrey.[2]
She worked as a pilot for the Air Transport Auxiliary from August 23, 1943 until September 1, 1945. She was ranked as a Third Officer. She received a Certificate of Commendation for landing a Spitfire that had technical difficulties in a small field with minimum damage on 25 June 1944.
