Biography

Kate was born in1860, the daughter of James Kentish and Mary Wesley (La Vence) at Rye Farm, Goodwood Road, district of Adelaide, South Australia^[1]

She was one of the younger members of the large family born at Rye Farm. She was often called 'Kittie' by her family and friends. She was approaching womanhood when her parents shifted to the Laura district. At this stage she was very much a home girl. Her age was such that she would have begun to take a social interest in the boys around her.

It was some 6 years after arriving in the area that Kate married Adam Adamson. Adam was an accountant and related to the Adamson family who operated a farm machinery manufacturing business with a factory in Laura. It is thought that Adam provided advice to the family business and it was on one of these trips to Laura that he met Kate.

Kate Emma Kentish married Adam Adamson on 6 October 1881 in the residence of James Kentish in Caltowie Extension, South Australia. Adam was 30 years old and Kate was 21 years old.^[2]

Adam was very good in business with his accountancy office in Grenfell Street, Adelaide. Fortunately he had a very good office secretary who would cover for him whilst he was having a few drinks.

After their marriage they lived at Burnside and then at Strangways Terrace, North Adelaide. Kate remained in close contact with her family, especially her younger unmarried sister 'Bessie' who would spend a great deal of time with the Adamsons. Adam was a good provider for his family which included 2 daughters and a son.

The family had several good holidays which included trips to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Kate had a comparatively easy life except for the times when Adam would drink excessively. It was then that Kate would visit her family in the various farms around Laura. Unfortunately Adam did not live to an old age due to kidney failure.

After Adam's death Kate sold her North Adelaide home and bought a smaller home Avonlea, Avenel Gardens Road, Medindie. This is where she died at the age of 80 years.

She passed away in 1940 aged 80 years^[3]
