Charles was born in 1868.

On 30 September 1919 his first wife Florence Victoria Kent-Johnston drowned in Devonport, aged 49.

In the later 1919 electoral roll at 52 Tainui Rd, Devonport there are Charles, accountant, and son Walter Frederick, telegraphist
