When adding a new profile, the checking is a very basic exact match only. What I like to do before adding someone new is open the Search for a Person page in a different tab or window to check whether the profile is already there.
Surname spelling variations can be checked as well as birth and date year from exact to plus/minus 30 years. Use an asterisk like Geo* to check Geo and George, etc.
The little "radio buttons" tell it how close you want to check the years. I usually do the one that says +/-2 years. If too many people show, I click "No" for "Surname Variants" and/or "without dates."
Play with that page and see what you think. The main things to remember are have fun and you can't break it *grin*

If you have not create a profile for your husband do so and then invite him to join by adding his e mail address in edit on his profile then you can both work on your family tree together.
Our primary vision is to build a collaborative tree with just one profile per person, so please make sure to look for duplicates on WikiTree before adding a profile. Having dates and locations attached to every person assists in our mission as well.
