William Keith, 4th Earl Marischal (c.1510-1581) was the eldest son of Robert, master of Marischal (d. 1524/5) and his wife, Elizabeth (or Beatrice) Douglas (d. after 1527), daughter of John, second earl of Morton.[1] He was still a minor when he succeeded to the title on the death of his grandfather between 24 November 1526 and 2 May 1527.
He married in 1531, or soon afterwards, Margaret (b. c.1518, d. in or before 1563), granddaughter and coheir of Sir William Keith of Inverugie, who brought great wealth of her own into the family. They had twelve children—nine daughters (among them Annas Keith, later countess of Moray and of Argyll), and three sons—including
On 20 Mar 1543, he was appointed one of eight guardians of Mary, Queen of Scots, during her childhood.[2]
He died on 7 October 1581, probably in Dunnottar Castle, near Stonehaven. His heir was his grandson George Keith.[3][4][5]

Another source indicates there were 12 children total between the two wives, according to this source: ( http://www.stirnet.com/genie/data/british/kk/keith02.php). This same source also proposes that William is the 4th Earl, rather than the 3rd. Do you have other references that might lend credibility to any of these proposed changes?
