Biography

Mary (Keen) Woodworth was born in Pennsylvania.
Mary served as a Civil War nurse for nearly four years, first at the Seminary Hospital in Georgetown and later at Chesapeake General Hospital in Virginia.
Mary (Keen) Woodworth was interred in Washington, D.C..

Marian went by Mary. She was born 2 Oct 1835 in Lebanon, Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She was christenef 8 Feb 1836. Her parents were Lewis Kien (misspelled) and Susanna Armstrong. [1]

In 1850, Mary was living with her parents and siblings in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. The head of household is Anthony O Donnell.

Mary was living with her parents in Pennsylvania when the Civil War broke out.

Mary enlisted in the Union Army as a Nurse in the Medical Department Volunteers in Washington, D.C., on 24 Jul 1861[3] and reported to the Seminary Hospital in Georgetown, District of Columbia where she remained until November 1864 when she transferred to Chesapeake General Hospital in Old Point Comfort, Virginia. She was discharged on 11 Jul 1865, [3] after almost four years of service.

Mary settled in Washington, D.C. and was a clerk at the Treasury Department where she met Milton Woodworth.

She married Joseph "Milton" Woodworth (went by Milton) on 14 Nov 1870 in Washington, D.C. [4] They had two sons:

  1. Lewis, born 7 May 1879, died 9 May 1879
  2. George Keen, born 1874, died 1958

From 1880 thru 1900 the family was living in Washington, D.C.

Mary received a Civil War pension for her nursing service in the Civil War. [7]

She passed away on 1 Apr 1922 in Washington, D.C. and is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington. [8] [9]

Most records are in the name of Mary A. E. Kien, or Mary A. Keen; Marian Elisabeth Kien is on the birth record.

The findagrave memorial states: "she was under Miss Dix and was in Georgetown, D. C., and Fort Monroe, Virginia. The "Miss Dix" is Dorothea Lynde "Dolly" Dix.
