Marie Salzman Karst's first husband was Jacob "Jake" Karst. He is named in a birth record for son Fred provided by his employer. One of the the only documents I found with his name and the correct city was his World War I draft registration document, which I attached to this profile. On it, he says he was born 06 February 1886 in Oberdorf, Volgograd, Russia.
[1]
His marriage record, however, says he was born in Grimm.
[2]
The couple married by 1914, and their first son was born about 1915, based on his age in the 1940 census. They had four documented children. Shown below are the birth records for Jacob and Frederick, born in 1914 and 1920. Additional children include Emma, born in 1916, and Herbert, born in 1917. Both Emma and Herbert are named in their siblings and step-siblings' obituaries.
Jacob Karst was traveling with Heinrich Karst, age 33, who appears to be his brother, when the two immigrated to the United States. Their closest living relative in Russia was an uncle, Christoph Karst. Heinrich left his wife behind, named the same as Jacob's wife: Marie Karst. Since we know that Jakob's wife Marie Saltzmann immigrated to the United States with her parents, both men must have had wives named Marie. A copy of this passenger manifest is attached to this profile.
In the passenger manifest shown below, it says under "Birth Location Other" that he was born in Oberdorf. That is more likely the village where he last lived. Oberdorf was a daughter colony settled by residents of Grimm, so if he lived there for any period of time, it would be completely logical for him to tell immigration personnel Oberdorf was the last place he lived, rather than his actual birth location.
In this 1914 Oshkosh, Wisconsin, city directory, both Jakob and Heinrich are shown, one above the other, both with wives named Mary [Marie]. A copy of this directory page is attached to this profile.

He also had a daughter named Emma, who eventually married a Prasser. She is identified in her brother Jacob Karst's obituary. She is identified separately from her half sisters with Fred Trott, so she is likely Jacob's daughter. Since she is not named in the 1940 census with the Trott family, she was probably already married or living on her own. According to her brother's obituary, she was living in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, in 1999.
By 1935 Jacob Karst had either passed away or divorced wife Marie. There is no record of either event.
In the 1943 Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, city directory, his wife Mary is listed as his widow, living at 115 Walnut Street. This is the same address that listed in the 1940 census listing for his wife Marie and her second husband Friedrich Trott. I'm assuming the house was still in her husband's name and no one had updated the listing for the residence. Although this is not a primary source, it does confirm that by 1943, Jacob Karst was deceased.
