Biography

John Juigalli has Italian Roots.

The spelling of John's last name seems very fluid. Every record has a different variation. Even his obituary is spelled differently than his Henderson directory entries and his grave marker. Consequently, John has been hard to trace.

The 1916 prairie census indicates that John had arrived in Canada by 1907. In 1911 he was living in Calgary with his wife Anna and his brothers-in-law Constance or Constanzo Gallo and Stephano Gallo. The extended family lived in Calgary's immigrant community of Bridgeland-Riverside. In 1911 the Juigilli family was on Wallace Avenue which became 2nd Avenue N.E. John also had a sister in the community by the name of Mary Viglietti who lived nearby.

In 1916 the family was living at 524 - 7th Street N.E. which was the location of a terrible event when their boarder by the name of Lauderic Germania opened fire in the kitchen and shot to death a family friend by the name of Pat (Pasquale) Corradetti and wounded Anna. The murderer escaped on a bicycle. It does not seem as if he was ever caught. ( The 1916 prairie census shows the family and their boarder.) The only motive for this event is that Lauderic had a habit of getting very drunk and firing off his gun.

Although it did not appear as if Anna was badly wounded at the time, she died from typhoid fever only two years later.

Around 1921 John married Nunziata DiPaolo. She would have helped raise John and Anna's children. It does not appear as if she had any children of her own.

John and Nunziata mostly lived at 408 - 3rd Avenue N.E. until around 1945 when they moved to 647 Marsh Road N.E. John worked for the City of Calgary in the Water Works department.

John died in 1952 and Nunziata in 1969. They are buried at St. Mary's cemetery.

John Giugalli

Requiem mass will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help church for John Giugalli, 69, of 647 Marsh Road, who died Wednesday in General hospital. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mr. Giugulli was born in Pizzo, Italy, and came to Calgary in 1907. He was employed with the water works department for 44 years until his retirement in 1951.

He is survived by his wife, Nunziata; one daughter, Mrs. John Morasco, Seattle; two sons, Peter and Matthew of Calgary; five grandchildren.

Special praryiers will be siad in the church Friday at 7:30 p.m. Jacques funeral home is in charge.
