Descendant of Adam Ivey.

Allen was born in 1892, the 3rd of 15 children to Robert Waldo Josey and Lucinda Ellen Ivey. His siblings were: Alexander Anton, Francis A, Susie Elvira, Hattie Louise, Lucy Myrtle, Bessie Pearl, Minnie Laura, Delia May, Elmore Carey, Ralph Waldo Jr, Sadie Lorene, Essie Inez, Carl Enice, and George Reliford; his 12 older half-siblings were: Mary Angeline, Addison Marion, Robert Samuel, Martha E, Nancy E, Henry B Taylor, Elizabeth Percilla, Charles L, Charles Inman Sr, Noah Washington, Joney Madison, and Annie A.
