Biography

Robert Mack Jordan was born in Indiana in 1842, the son of Peter and Mary Jane Jordan. He and his father both served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Robert married Sophia Schmidlapp in 1865 in Indiana.

In 1850, the Jordan family lived in Kent, Jefferson, Indiana. The household included Peter Jordan, 35, born in Kentucky, a merchant; his wife Mary, 34, b. KY; their four children, all b. Indiana: Robert 7; Thomas J., 5; james, 3; and Viola, 1. Also living with them were Emaline Ravensey (Ramsay? Possible relative to Mary Jane?), 17, b. KY; and James Inders, 24, b. KY. [1]

In 1860, the Jordan family lived in Kent Village, Indiana. The household included Peter Jordan, 49, born in Kentucky, worked in saw milling, with $1600 in real estate and $300 in personal estate; his wife, Mary J., 40, b. Indiana; their seven children, all born in Indiana, and all in school except for the eldest one: Robert M., 18, saw milling work; Thomas J., 16; James T., 14; Viola, 12; John, 8; Harriet, 6; and Elenora, 6. Robert M. Jordan and Sophia Schmidlapp were married on 5 March 1865 in Jefferson, Indiana. John Chambers officiated. [3]

In 1880, the Jordan family lived in Vernon, Jackson, Indiana. The household included Robert M. Jordan, 38, a general store merchant; his wife Sophia, 35; their children, all in school except for the baby: Luella, 14; Mary L., 12; Clinton, 11; and Clara, 1; Robert’s mother, Mary Jane Jordan, 60, a widow, whose father was born in Indiana, and whose mother was b. Kentucky; and Robert’s two siblings, John H. Jordan, 28, a farmer; and Nora Jordan, 26. All were born in Indiana. [4]

In 1900, the Jordan family lived in Jackson Township, Seymour City, Indiana. The household included Robert M. Jordan, 58, born April 1842, a huckster who rented their house; his wife of 35 years, Sophia, 56, b. Nov 1844 (father b. Germany; mother b. Massachusetts). They had had five children, four of whom were living; their daughters, Carrie E., 21, b. Apr 1879, a waiter in a restaurant; and Stella G., 17, b. Aug 1883, a weaver at Norden (?) Mill. All were born in Indiana. All could read and write. [5]

In 1910, the Jordan family lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, at 1113 Pleasant Street. The household included Robert M. Jordan, 68, (retired) with own income, a Union Army veteran; his wife of 45 years, Sophia, 65, who had had five children, three of whom were living; their daughters, Clara, 30, an inspector with Owenhall (?) Factory; and Stella, 26. Also living with them were three boarders. All members of the household were born in Indiana. [6]

Robert Jordan and Sophia Schmidlapp are mentioned in the marriage record of their daughter, Clara Jordan, who married Richard Steadman on 29 August 1922 in Jefferson county, Indiana. [7]

Robert M. Jordan served in Monroe’s Independent Co. 9, Indiana Legion during the Civil War. He began drawing his Union Army Pension in August 1890 in Indiana. His widow, Sophia Jordan, received widow’s benefits in September 1913 in Indiana. [8]

Robert Jordan was born in Kent, Indiana in 1842. He was a Private in Monroe's Independent Co. 9, Indiana Legion, Union Army, Civil War. Robert was the owner and driver for a wagon transfer company.He died in 1913 at Deaconess Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana. He died of Uremia. Robert is buried in Kent Cemetery, Kent, Indiana.[9]
