Obituary

Mrs. Eliza Nixon, Invalid 16 Years, Dies at Age of 84

Had Made Home in Alton for Period of 40 Years

Mrs. Eliza J. Nixon, widow of Joseph Nixon, died at 4 pm Saturday at the age of 84 years at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Lessner, 1206 Highland Avenue.

For the last 16 years Mrs. Nixon had been a patient invalid. She was suffering from sciatic rheumatism. Her death, however, resulted from infirmities of age. Grief at the death last January of a devoted son, William J Nixon, who had made his home with her, brought on a general decline. Her final illness set in five weeks ago.

Devoted to Home

Despite her invalidism, Mrs Nixon was devoted to her own home, and it was not until the death of her son, William last January that she consented to leave it and make her home with her daughter Mrs. Lessner.

Realizing that Mrs. Nixon continued to suffer the effects of her bereavement in the death of her son, Mrs. Lessner and her brother John Nixon, arranged early in June to take their mother back to her old home, Sharpsburg, PA, for a brief visit with relatives and old friends in hope the change in scene would benefit her.

The trip was made by automobile in easy stages and return to the scenes of her girlhood life was thoroughly enjoyed by Mrs. Nixon. Unfortunately she was taken ill and the visit had to be cut short. On her return she failed to rally her strength. An old heart ailment and attendant complications manifested itself, and a steady decline set in which culminated in her death Saturday.

Lived here 40 years

Mrs. Nixon was born in Allegheny, PA, June 8, 1845, but had been a resident of Alton for virtually 40 years, having come here in 1890. She was a member of the Upper Alton Baptist Church and was active in its affairs until invalidism confined her to her home.

Besides her children, Mrs. Lessner and John Nixon, she leaves three grandchildren, Mrs. Albert Weinbrinton of Belleville, Mrs. Floyd Cress and William J Nixon of Alton; also three great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be at 2:30 pm Tuesday from the Streeper funeral home to Oakwood cemetery. The Rev Dr. A.A. Hobson will officiate.
