Biography

Research shows Jacob's parents died and he became an orphan at a very young age. It is unknown where he received his education; but, he apparently practiced medicine and worked as a clerk for the Delaware Supreme Court. He was married to Anna Matilda Sykes the daughter of the 15th Governor of Delaware.

After her passing he joined the Navy and advanced rapidly through the ranks. During his command of the USS Wasp he captured the Royal Navy sloop of war HMS Frolic and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
