JOHANNIS WALTER MEYER [or Waltermire, Waldenmier, etc.] was the subject of several of them. He was a noted Tory spy and agitator and several books have been writtenabout his exploits during the Revolution, one of which was the attempted kidnapping of General Schuyler in Albany in 1780. Two of the books are: JOHN WALDEN MEYERS LOYALIST SPY, by Mary Beacock Frye r, (Dundern Press 1983), and HANS WALTIMYER, by Jane Bennett Goddard, 1980. [See also the lengthy accounts in the NEW-YORK JOURNAL and GENERAL ADVERTISER issues of 13 Aug 1781 and 20 Aug. 1781]. Unfortunately, neither of the books mentions much about his activities in Dutchess Co., nor do they tell of his ancestery. He was born 24 Feb 1745, the son of John George Waltermire [who is listed in DAR Graves 2:122 NYSL, because he "made loans to the government"] and Margaret Bard, and was bpt. at the Red Hook Lutheran Ch. {FJD}. John Waltermire spent some time in Beekman in 1778 and on several occasions was able to persuade local men who lived on Mountain Road [in present day LaGrange] to go with him to join the British in New York. Instead he was destined to gain a legendary reputation for his exploits during the war and he would later establish himself as a leader in developing a new society in Canada. CONT CONT CONT The son of German immigrants, Hans Waltimeyer, as he was originally known, was a tenant farmer near Albany, in the British Province of New York, when the war broke out. As the Revolution was also the first American Civil War, Meyers was faced with the agony of choosing sides against many of his neighbours and family. Although there is some question as to his earlier allegiance, Meyers eventually sided with the British and was ever after a most zealous Loyalist. He recruited other loyal colonists for the Provincial Corps of the British Army, earning himself the rank of Captain. John Meyers served in the infamous Burgoyne Campaign that culminated in the decisive Battle of Saratoga. But John Meyers made his greatest impression as a courier, spy, and guerrilla. He gained a legendary, almost superhuman reputation among both friend and foe. His enemies noted him for "courage and daring rather than brutality or ferocity," although rebel mothers would threaten their children that Captain Meyers would "eat them" if they did not behave! Captain John Walden Meyers CONT CONT 1745-1821 CONT CONT CONT CONT Johannes Waldemeyer, on first leaving his family and farm in the Hudson Ri ver Valley, attempted to join General Burgoyne and his army, but arrived too late. He spent most of the war as a scout/spy and courier for Govern or Haldimand, recruiting men for the British on his many journeys on foot between his old home and Quebec. Although a very conspicuous individual, tall with a head of bushy red hair, he was able to slip through enemy lines undetected, often resorting to hiding in caves for weeks until it w as safe to proceed. CONT CONT After the peace was signed, he brought his wife and seven children to the Bay of Quinte area where he established a mill on the River Moira (formerly Meyers' Creek) where the city of Belleville is situated. He acquired a great deal of land through petition and purchase, and became a wealthy and influential citizen. He built the first brick house in Upper Canada in 1794 with bricks made on his farm in Sidney Township. This house was referred to as Meyers' Castle and stood on the bluff overlooking the river until 1883. His business interests were many: grist and saw mills, distillery, bateaux shipping on Lake Ontario, brick works, farming. He served as a magistrate and was Justice of the Peace for the district of Mecklenburgh. His testament and signature as character witness or guarantor are on many petitions by other Loyalists in their pleas for land. As well, he helped to start an agricultural fair, the first chapter of the Masonic order in the Quinte area, and St. Thomas Anglican Church in Belleville. CONT CONT Belleville honours him as its founder with markers and monuments placed about the city. A stone storehouse remains on his property on the riverba nk at the site of his mill dam, and a granite monument to his contribution is in the Old Burying Ground on the Front of Sidney, resting where he is buried.
