May have been a member of the North Carolina legislature. Served in the Confederate Army in the US Civil War.
Research Notes
Although William's headstone says 'Genl', there is no indication he held that rank. He was 55 when he enlisted in the Confederate Army in April of 1861 and was commissioned as a Captain. He mustered out a few months later, in August. Records consistently use the name 'William', or his initials.
