Henry Gustave Joly was born on 5 December 1829 in Épernay, Marne, France. He was the son of Gaspard Pierre Gustave Joly and Julie Christine Chartier de Lotbinière.[1] He married Margaretta Josepha, daughter of Hammond Gowen, on 6 May 1856 at Cathedral Holy Trinity in Quebec City.[2] Henri added the name de Lotbinière in 1888. The life of Henry-Gustave Joly de Lotbiniere is recorded in "Patrician Liberal" by J.I. Little, published by the University of Toronto Press 2013. J.I. Little is a Professor in the Department of History at Simon Fraser University. For another perspective see "Town House, Country House" written by his grand-daughter Hazel Boswell and published by McGill-Queen's University Press. It is based on her mother Julia de Lotbiniere's recollections of her childhood.
