Mary was born on 29 May 1864 in Gibraltar, the daughter of James Johnstone, a colour sergeant in the Royal Fusiliers, and his wife Eliza Farmer.

When she was about 8 her parents relocated to Scotland, first to Fort George, Ardersier, Invernessshire, and then to Inverness, where her father was a clerk in the Royal Engineers Dept.

Mary married Robert Chalmers on 21 August 1888 in North Queensferry, Fife, where she had been working as a domestic servant.

and they had five children. She died of valvular heart disease in North Queensferry on 11 June 1917, aged only 53.
