Biography

Lord William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale was born on February 17, 1663 in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, the son of James Johnstone and Henrietta (Douglas) Johnstone . He was the brother of Mary (Johnstone) Lindsay, Margaret (Johnstone) Montgomery, Janet Johnstone, Isabel Johnstone, James Johnstone, John Johnstone, George Johnstone, Henrietta (Johnstone) Carmichael and Anna Johnstone. Sir William's distant relative, George Johnstone was Royal Governor of West Florida under England from 1763 to 1767.

Lord William first married Lady Sophia Fairholm, daughter of John Fairholm of Craigiehall, on January 2, 1682 in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. They had the following children:

1. Lady Henrietta Johnstone (11 November 1682 – 25 November 1750) married on 31 August 1699 to Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun
2. Mary Johnstone (15 June 1686 – died an infant)
3. James Johnstone, 2nd Marquess of Annandale (1687– 21 February 1730) died unmarried
4. John Johnstone born in 1688 and died young
5. William Johnstone (1696 – 24 December 1721)

Lord William second married Charlotte V. Bempdé, daughter of John Vanden Bempde of Hackness, on November 20, 1718 in Fleet Chapel, City of London, Greater London, England. They had the following children:

1. George Johnstone, 3rd Marquess of Annandale (29 May 1720 – 29 April 1792) died unmarried
2. John Johnstone (8 June 1721 – October 1742) married Mary Beddoe of Ludlow

William who was Second Earl of Annandale and Third Earl of Hartfell held successively the offices of an Extraordinary Lord of Session, Lords of the Treasury, President of the Scottish Parliament, Keeper of the Privy Seal, and was three times Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly.

William was created Marquis of Annandale in 1701. In 1705 he was appointed one of the principal Secretaries of State. He was dismissed from that office in the following year in consequence of his opposition to the Union.

The Earl had three sons by his first wife and two by his second, who all died unmarried. His eldest daughter, Lady Henrietta married Charles Hope in 1699 who was created Earl of Hopetoun in 1703.

Lord William Johnstone died on January 14, 1721 in Bath, Avon, England leaving no male heir.
