Biography

William Johnstone was born 12 February 1824 in Lot 19, Prince, Prince Edward Island and baptized in the Church of England, Richmond Parish on 12 April 1824, son of David Johnstone ^[1] and Janet (McMurdo) Johnstone, ^[2] from Lot 19. ^[3] William Johnstone married Catherine McKay by license on 15 February 1849, married by George McKay JP. John Johnstone and Alex McKay were witnesses. ^[4] He was a sea captain who lived in Lot 21 in 1861. That census lists Captain William Johnston with a household of 9, all Presbyterian. There was one married couple, and 7 single people: 2 boys and 1 girl under 5; 2 boys and 2 girls between 5-15; a man and a woman between 21-45.^[5] The family says he died in 1877 at sea. ^[6] A grave marker in the New London Protestant Cemetery; Lot 21 reads:

Captain William Johnston, died January 1877 at 53

his wife, Catherine, died July 31 1873 at 41 (or 44)

and son William, died April 1878 at age 19
