David Lloyd Johnston PC CC CMM COM CD FRSC(hon) FRCPSC(hon) (born June 28, 1941) is a Canadian academic, author, and statesman who served from 2010 to 2017 as Governor General of Canada, the 28th since Canadian Confederation. On October 1, 2010, Mr. Johnston was sworn in as the 28th governor general since Confederation. His motto, CONTEMPLARE MELIORA, meaning “To envisage a better world,” refers to his belief in the abilities of all Canadians to imagine and create a smarter, more caring nation and contribute to a fairer, more just world.

David Lloyd Johnston's parents were Lloyd Allen Johnston and Dorothy Stonehouse. At the time of David's birth on June 28, 1941, the family was living on Serpentine Street in Copper Cliff, above the hardware store that David's father managed. The family lived in Copper Cliff until David was 4 years old. The family would move to Sudbury where Lloyd Johnston would continue his career in retail management. The family lived on Bloor Street in Sudbury until about 1950.[1]

David attended high school in Sault Ste Marie and entered Harvard University on a hockey scholarship. He was named twice to the All American team and elected to Harvard's athletic hall of fame. He graduated magna cum laude in 1963. He later obtained Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of Cambridge and Queen’s University. In 1964,

In 1966 David was appointed as an assistant professor of law at Queen's University. He taught law at the University of Toronto from 1968 to 1974. In that year he was named dean of Western University law faculty and in 1979 he was named principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University. In 1999 he was named firth president and the vice-chancellor University of Waterloo where he served until he was asked to serve as Canada's 28th governor general.

Mr. Johnston is the author or co-author of more than 25 books, including new editions, and he holds honorary doctorates from more than 25 universities and learning institutions in Canada, China and India. He was invested as an officer of the Order of Canada in 1988 and promoted to companion, the Order’s highest level, in 1997.
