Biography
Katherine Kelso Johnston was born on 8 October 1816 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA, daughter of Alexander Johnston (~1784–~1832) and Mary Stevenson (~1792–~1820).
Katherine (18) married Robert Simpson Cassatt (28) (born on 24 July 1806 in Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia, United States; son of Denis Cassatt and Lydia (Simpson) Cassatt) on 22 January 1835 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny. Their known children were:
- Lydia Simpson Cassatt (1837–1882) .
- Alexander Johnston Cassatt (1839–1906) .
- Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844–1926) .
- Joseph Gardiner Cassatt (1849–1911)
She is the mother of noted Impressionist Artist, Mary Stevenson Cassatt and is portrayed frequently in her daughter's art.
Katherine died before 20 October 1895 in Beaufresne, Seine-Maritime, Haute-Normandie, France, aged about 79. She was buried in Church of the Redeemer Cemetery, Bryn Mawr, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA (plot: Lot 487 [Cenotaph]).[1]
