John Johnson was born September 1st 1863 in Parwich. He was the son of William Johnson and Ellen (Beresford) Johnson. His parents lived with his paternal grandparents; his paternal grandfather had a small farm, which John's father was farming for him.
John was christened November 22nd 1863 as a Wesleyan Methodist, along with his older brother Samuel.
John's paternal grandfather died in 1864, and his grandmother in 1867.
By 1871, his parents were still living in Parwich, and his father was still a farmer, so had probably inherited some or all of the land from his own father. There were two children in the household - Samuel (11) and John (7).
By 1881, John's parents seem to have separated - his mother Ellen had moved to the city and was lodging with her daughter Sarah Ellen (Beresford) Dutton in Wolstanton, Stoke on Trent, as was John's older brother Samuel. John and his father remained on the farm in Parwich.
