Biography

Cynthia Johnson was born about 1780. She passed away in 1838. She married Elijah Gleason about 1799.

Alias: Cynthia Gunn Johnson.

In "Genealogy of the descendants of Thomas Gleason of Watertown, Mass" By J.B. White. page 236 she is called Cynthia Gunn. And is presented as the first wife of Elijah Gleason. They have 7 children, all born in Little Barrington (Berkshire County, MA): Lewis, Hiram, Elijah Jr (who marries Bersheba Gunn), Alonso, Lucy, Chauncy and Caroline (who remains unmarried).[1]

Either this is an error or there is another explanation. For example, Cyntha may have married a Gunn in Sheffield before she married Elijah Gleason. There are a half dozen Gunns born in Sheffield who might have been her first husband about whom we know very little. Anyway, the Gunns and the Gleasons must have been closely associated. The two families lived in Sheffield, Massachusetts, then in Canaan, Connecticut, and finally in Ashtabula, Ohio. Elijah Gleason Jr. (1806-1883) married Bersheba "Basha" Gunn in 1834 in Ashtabula. And Lucy Gleason (1771-1843) married Noble Gunn near Canaan in 1786.

A biography of Elijah Gleason can be found in the book entitled "The Ancestors & Descendants of Elijah Gleason and his First Wife, Cynthia Johnson, and his Second Wife, Betsey Davis".[2] Among a good deal of other information it says that he is buried with his wives in the Harpersfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio cemetery "in a long row covered with myrtle, with only markers, no inscriptions".[3]

Burial: Harpersfield Cemetery, Harpersfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio, USA[4]
