johnson, s. e. of the firm of johnson & schreckengast, dealers in general merchandise, keota, p. o. talleyrand; born in ashland co, ohio, mar 28, 1835; when about 3 yrs old his family moved to dekalb co, ind where he continued to live until fall l855, when he came to iowa and located in talleyrand, remaining there but 1 yr, and then returned to his native state, where he continued to reside until 1859, then moved to dekalb co, mo; while there he was engaged in teaching and surveying until the inaugural of lincoln in 1861, when owing to sectional strife he thought dissection being the better part of valor & again returned to talleyrand, where he enlisted in co. d, 13th iowa, as a priv under capt price in oct, 1861, & continued in that company for 2 yrs, & was then transferred to the 66th u.s. colored inf & was promoted first lieutenant, & afterward 3rd adjutant of the reg., which commission he held until he was mustered out of the service, may 31, 1866, & returned to his home @@ talleyrand; mr. johnson’s war experience lasted from the beginning to the close of the rebellion, & was filled with hard service & gave him a thorough understanding of what is meant by the horrors of war. upon his return from the army he started a general store @@ talleyrand, & the yr following (1877) he traded his store & stock to rj henderson for the homestead where he now lives, consisting of 200 acres, & september 9, 1869, he was married to miss alice mccampbell, d/o robt mccampbell, by this union they have 3 daughters and 1 son: loie estelle, florence, Ddora, alice and albert s. samuel is a genial gentleman, quick observer & prompt in business, as he is generous in his social relations, & thoroughly merits the esteem in which he is held by his fellow citizens.
