Biography

From Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Tippecanoe County, Illinois:[1]

ABNER JOHNSON, deceased, of Sheffield Township, was one of the prominent pioneers of Tippecanoe County. He was a son of Robert and Mary Johnson, and was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, February 4, 1814, and came with his parents to this county in 1829, first settling at Stockwell, where his parents resided until the time of their death. On the 29th of February, 1836, Abner Johnson was married to Miss Hannah Fuller, who was the daughter of Joseph and Anna Fuller, and was born September 22, 1817. By this marriage Mr. Johnson had ten children, some of whom preceded him by death. Those living are - Louis F., of Sheffield Township; Anna, now Mrs. Stufflebeam, a resident of Illinois, and Miriam, now Mrs. Lintz, of Dayton, Indiana. Mrs. Johnson departed this life June 28, 1879. He was married March 24, 1881, to Miss Sarah J. Barr, a native of Clarke County, Ohio, who still survives. Soon after his marriage, in 1836, he settled on the farm where his widow still resides, being section 29, where he resided for over fifty years until the time of his death which occurred December 1, 1885. In 1854 he received a commission as Captain of Company S, in the First Regiment of the Eighth Military District of the State of Indiana, which office he held for six years. During his long and eventful life he was one of Tippecanoe County’s best known and most respected citizens, a successful farmer, who by industry succeeded in acquiring a large property, consisting of about 600 acres of well improved land. Being of a retiring disposition he never sought nor accepted public office, but quietly supported the political party of his choice. He was a Democrat during the early part of his life, but about 1850 he became a strong Abolitionist, and after the formation of the Republican party he identified himself with that party and was a warm supporter of it during the remainder of his life. For over fifty years prior to his death he was a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and a large contributor to its support.
