Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Solomon Johnson is a part of US Black heritage.
Solomon Johnson was born in Georgia.

Solomon was born enslaved in 1820. The first record of Solomon was in the will of Hezekiah Magruder and was inherited by Thomas Magruder. Solomon took the surname of Johnson as shown by the 1870 census.

In 1866, Solomon and his wife, Jane, and children, Pink, John, Holland, and Alfred, signed an employment contract with Thomas S McGruder. The contract stated that they would work obediently and not leave the plantation without permission. In exchange Thomas was to provide them with house, firewood, and a tenth of the corn and cotton grown to be divided between them and the other workers.[1]

Magruder-690 and Johnson-138009 appear to represent the same person because: I believe that Solomon Johnson is the name taken by the slave named Solomon after emancipation. Thomas S McGruder made employment contracts with his former slaves in 1866. I believe it very likely that the Solomon he made that contract with is the same one he inherited from his father. Solomon used the surname Johnson on the 1870 census.
