Biography

Joseph John, sometimes referred to as Joseph Johns, was born in 1840 in Georgia[1] and migrated to Bradley co., Arkansas with his parents shortly before 1860.[2] While living in Arkansas, John met and later married Mary King on 28 April 1861 at Union County Arkansas.[3]
When the American Civil War began, John enlisted on May 3, 1862 in Drew co., Arkansas as a private in Co. G, 2nd Regiment Arkansas Infantry, CSAJohn was wounded in action at Franklin, Tennessee on 30 November 1864 having been shot in his right thigh. He was captured by Federal forces on 18 December 1864 at Franklin, Tennessee and was later sent to Camp Chase, Ohio as a prisoner of war[4] where he died from gangrene on July 26, 1865.[5][6][7]
Research Note
There is a discrepancy in the sourced records relating to his death. The US Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers source has a card in it that records he died on 26 July 1865. The United States Register of Confederates and Civilians Who Died in the North,1861-1865 source records his death occurred on 20 July 1865.
