Isabella Kate Jobson, known as Belle, was born in 1878 in Clunes, Victoria. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Cameron (McColl) Jobson and Christopher Jobson.[1]
Isabella trained as a nurse at the Albert Hospital in Prahran. There or earlier she became friends with Leah Rosenthal (1879-1930). From 1910 they ran the Windarra Private Hospital in Toorak together.
In December 1915, they set out for England, where they joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service. In April 1916, they commenced duty in France. Isabella worked in hospitals and clearing stations until she resigned in January 1919. She was awarded the Royal Red Cross for her service.
The two women returned to Australia where they bought and ran a private hospital which they renamed Vimy House. Isabella continued to run the hospital after Leah's death in 1930.
Isabella died on 6 July 1943 at Vimy House Private Hospital, 25 Queen's Road, Melbourne, with age recorded as 63.[2][3][4] She was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery.[5]
The following obituary appeared in The Age newspaper:[6]
Matron of Vimy House
Miss Isabella Jobson, who died yesterday after a long illness, was well known in medical and nursing circles as the matron of Vimy House private hospital, Queen's-road. For many years Miss Jobson conducted the hospital in partnership with Miss Leah Rosenthal, and after the latter's death some years ago continued to conduct the hospital herself. Miss Jobson trained at the Alfred Hospital, and served with the Australian Army Nursing Service in France during the last war, when she won the Royal Red Cross. The funeral, which will be private, will leave Sleight's Chapel, St. Kilda-road, for the Melbourne Cemetery, Carlton, at 3.30 p.m., following a service at 3.15 conducted by Rev. S. L. McKenzie.
