Biography

Alfred Jerrard was born in Norfolk, England.

Alfred was born on 04 July 1850 and christened on 11 August in Long Stratton, Norfolk, England. He was the son of the Reverend Frederick W H Jerrard and Rhoda Jerrard.

The census of England and Wales carried out in 1851 shows the family living in Flower Pot Lane, Long Stratton, Norfolk. Counting only the family members, the household consisted of:

Rhoda S Jerrard, wife, age 39, rector's wife, born in Axmouth, Devon

The entry on Alfred in the 1912 book of his brother FBJ Jerrard says:

ALFRED WILDER JERRARD: Norwich School, Captain of School; "Eleven" "Football Team". Christchurch Oxon., Junior Student 1869, 2nd "Mods", 1st "Greats", 1873. Head Master Portsmouth School, 1879-93. See "The Norvicencian", July, and "Portsmouthian", June 1893 (School magazines).

According to the 1871 census, Alfred was still living with his parents. ^[1]

By the time of the 1881 census Alfred was the headmaster of Portsmouth Grammar School, living on King's Terrace, Portsea Island, Hampshire. ^[2]

Alfred married Rosa Mary Hellard on 23 April 1889 in the district of Portsea Island, Hampshire. ^[3] The marriage notice appeared in the Western Times ^[4]. Their children were:

• Charles Frederick Jerrard, born on 08 June 1890 in Portsmouth, Hampshire
• Rhoda Jerrard, born on 08 June 1890 in Portsmouth
• Phyllis Jerrard, born on 29 June 1891 in Portsmouth

This is confirmed by the 1891 census. ^[5] Living in the family residence on Nightingale Road, Portsea, Hampshire, were:

Alfred W Jerrard, head, age 40, headmaster Grammar School, born in Long Stratton

Rose M Jerrard, wife, age 38, born in Hampshire

Charles F Jerrard, son, age 0, born in Hampshire

Rhoda Jerrard, daughter, age 0, born in Hampshire

along with four servants

Alfred died on 19 May 1893. An obituary appeared in the Western Times on 26 May. ^[6] Probate on the estate was granted on 12 July 1893 in Winchester, Hampshire: the beneficiary of Alfred's will was his wife, Rosa Mary. ^[7]
