John Jenkins came free to the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

John Greeley Jenkins was the twenty-second premier of South Australia, the first to be elected after South Australia canged from a British Colony to an Australian State.

Birth

John was born in 1851 in Pennsylvania, United States, the fourth son of Evan Jenkins and Mary Davis of South Wales,

He was educated at Wyoming Seminary in northeastern Pennsylvania, then worked on his father's farm. He became a traveller for a publishing company in 1872 and travelled to South Australia in 1878 as a representative of that company, then bean importing both American and English books.[1]

Marriage

He married Jennie Mary Charlton in Adelaide, South Australia on 4 January 1883.

He was elected to the South Australian ouse of Assembly for East Adelaide in June 1886, and transferred to the district of Sturt in 1887. He became premier in May 1901 when Frederick Holder resigned to move to federal parliament. He resigned on 1 March 1905 to become On 1 March 1905 he resigned to become agent-general for South Australia in London. He remained in London after resigning from this role in 1908.[1]
