Biography

NOTE: Vincent had a younger brother named Owen Vincent Jarrett (1820-1909) who occasionally gets confused with Vincent. The younger brother was known by his name Owen and is often listed in records as Owen V. or Owen B. due to sound-alike initials V &B.

Vincent was the son of Owen Jarrett and Elizabeth Vincent, said to have been born 2 days before Christmas 1813. Birth date on his marriage license (dated 4-6-1869) lists his age as 54 (b.1814-15); 1860 census give age 50 (b. 1809-10); headstone gives birthdate 1812. He grew up on the Elk River a few miles NE of Charleston, near today's Jarrett's Ford, WV.

Vincent married twice: first when he was 23 to Delilah Atkinson on Aug 3, 1837, Kanawha Co marriage records; and after her death when he was 54 to 33 yr old Martha Young. ( Kanawha Co Marriages show Vincent Jarrett-54 a widower b. Kanawha Co, son of Owen & Elizabeth Jarrett md. Martha Young-33 single b. Kanawha, dau of Lewis and Mary Young. April 6 1869. ) With Delilah, he had 8 children: Lewis Melvin; Mary Estaline, Maliss A., Nancy Isabelle, Elizabeth A., Sarah Caroline, Buel Worth and William L. With Martha, he had Ward Darlington.
