Biography

Name: Abraham Jansen van Salee[1]

Their surname “Van Salee” refers to their origin in the Republic of Salé in modern Morocco.[1]

Born about 1602

Abraham's son Frans Abrahamszen, apparently an illegitimate child fathered with an unknown black woman,[2] became the progenitor of the African-American side of the van Salee family. Descendants include: [1]

  • Dr. John van Salee De Grasse, born in 1825. He was the first African American to be formally educated as a doctor. A member of the Medical Society of Massachusetts, he also served as surgeon to the celebrated 54th Regiment during the Civil War.
  • Serena De Grasse, who married George Downing, a successful black restauranteur in New York City and in Newport, Rhode Island.

Done! Thanks for your extensive work on the profile for Frans.

I did revise his LNAB before connecting him here. Our New Netherland project naming conventions indicate that his LNAB should be Abrahamszen, the patronymic name recorded at his marriage.
