Biography

B.J. was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Charles Jamieson and Carol Learoyd.

A project in Grade 8 history started her interest in her family history, but she only started pursuing serious research as an adult.

Not long after she started seriously researching the family history, her father (the son of Scottish-born immigrants to Canada and later the United States) asked her how Irish he needed to admit to being. He wasn't thrilled to hear almost half, but later DNA testing and genealogical research have shown that B.J.'s quick early guesstimate wasn't far too off.

B.J.'s mid life crisis was to move to Maine and go to library school, both of which she did successfully.

Becoming a librarian allowed B.J. to do what many people dream of doing: making her hobby her occupation, as she is now the genealogy reference specialist at the Maine State Library, spending her work days helping others trace their ancestors and preparing programs for the library's genealogy club (some of which are at the Genealogy at the Maine State Library YouTube channel).

One of B.J.'s greatest achievements was missing the horrendously snowy Maine winter of 2015 (a bit too much white stuff, even for snow-loving her) by making a research trip to Scotland and Ireland, where she visited 73 libraries and archives in 61 days. Unfortunately, despite researching from Hawick (almost in England) to Tongue (on the north coast), she still hasn't figured out who her great-grandmother Elizabeth Little's father was, leaving a large hole in her pedigree chart.

Any typographic errors in her contributions to WikiTree are undoubtedly created by her cats Scout and Flora, who love to sit between her and the computer while she's chasing ancestors.

Hi B.J.

I think I may have written you at some point. I know I at least remember that I had saw that I had a cousin that worked in the Maine State Archives. 😃 I received my great grandmother's death cert from there a while back. She's buried in Levant only the town doesn't have her listed. I've had people walk the graveyard and she isn't on any stones. Anyways that isn't the way we are related. That great grandmother is my grandmother's mother. (dad side) . I'm related to you through my dad's father. My 2nd great grandmother was Emeline McCartney Norton. (We have her bible but it was a bit disappointing because it isn't a family bible with dates and family members.) It does list her address as living in Salem, MA . My grandfather also put a notecard that said it belonged to his grandmother. Would love to connect. I'm about 3 years into genealogy. Was curious one night about a family story and decided I wanted to figure out the exact relationship. Still haven't figured that out but enjoy finding the stories of my ancestors. I enjoyed your bio. You were lucky you missed the winter of 2015. There was so much snow my doctor actually decided to move to FL. 😂 She was young too and had 2 young kids. Funny you mentioned the Irish blood. My dad says his nana actively denied they had Irish blood. I thought that was strange because I assumed McCartney was Irish. I know Emeline's dad, James McCartney died young. I found some newspaper stories in PA that there was a bridge construction accident. Perhaps he was injured and died in MA because the death is recorded in MA. Feel free to email me at [email address removed] Take care! Sarah

Hi BJ,

I noticed that you have marked a number of relationships as DNA confirmed. There is a requirement to document how the confirmation was made. Please take a look at DNA Confirmation Thanks for helping to improve the accuracy of WikiTree.

Hi, just been reading your comments on Elizabeth Little, her son William Little, born Kirkhope 1876 was my Grandad who was a man that I was very close to, like yourself I have been unable to find any male parentage

So wonderful to hear from you! That makes us 2nd cousins once removed if my post-it note scribbles are right.

I've spent lots and lots of time looking for the father (fathers?) of the older Elizabeth Little's children. No luck so far.

Have you taken a DNA test? If not, can I talk you into one? And do you have any cousins who are male-line only descendants of William Little we can talk into a Y-DNA test? No guarantees all four of Elizabeth's children had the same father (especially given that the first known child was born in 1864 when Elizabeth was 17 and the last known in 1885, when she was 38), but it would be a place to start ;-)

Hi BJ,

I noticed you added quite a few Buffum children to Damaris (Pope) Buffum (1643-), referencing Salem Vital Records. I looked at the VRs, and for the children you added, I didn't see parents shown in birth or death records. Is there something else that supports them being Joshua and Damaris (Pope) Buffum's children?

I'll need to double check my notes when I get home from work, but I'm pretty sure I worked from the Buffum family papers at the Phillips Library (part of the Peabody Essex Museum) that were used in compiling the vital records. However, it's been almost 20 years since I looked at the originals, so I may be off on some of the details...

From private record 477 [Buffum family papers] in the Salem vital records, birth dates for: Mary b. 1663, Robard b. 1669, Damaris b. 1671, and both Ratiers (b. 1673 and 1676).

From private record 42 [Buffum family papers extracted into Benjamin Browne's memorandum book] in the Salem vital records, birth date for: Robert 1666.

From church record 7 [Salem monthly meeting of the Society of Friends {Quakers}]: Joshua 1681, Samuel 1683.

All of these children are listed as children of Joshua and Damaris in Perkins's Buffum genealogy. He also adds two other children that might belong to this family:

William b. 1678

Unnamed daughter b. about 1679

One of these [likely William, if so] might be the child that is listed at the end of the Buffum births in the Salem VRs, with the PR477 source. William more likely because the unnamed child is described as the son of the unnamed parent. Perkins believes this is William, with a birth date that matches.

One thing to note is that the Salem MM records only start about 1677, even though the meetings for worship in Salem started in the late 1650s (1657ish, if my memory isn't completely failing me).
