Biography

John was born in 1834. He passed away in 1870.

Marriage: John Booral Jaggers married Jane Agnes Hearne on 2 March 1865 registered at Carcoar, New South Wales.[1] They had children:

  • Annie Elizabeth Jaggers 1866–1891
  • Jane Agnes Jaggers 1867–1939
  • John Malcolm Jaggers 1869–1943

The following is from BEN HALL - The Definitive Illustrated history by Edar Penzig (pp. 276-277), quoted in Monaro Pioneers database:

"During the night of August 4th, (1864) Detective jaggers, who was known as a most efficient police officer and a good shot and who, according to the Yass Courier held "a roving commission in bushranging matters", made his way in the dark to a dwelling of questionable reputation which was situated between Marengo and Crowther station. He then entered the premises and waited, in the chance of a visit by some of the bushranging fraternity. As luck would have it, towards morning the two mounted troopers stationed at Crowther made their way towards the same building where Jaggers was secreted, with the same intentions as their comrade in arms. The two policemen reached their destination in the dim light of early morning and rode at a fast pace towards the dwelling in the hope of catching any villains who might be there in their beds.
Jaggers, not knowing that the two troopers were stationed at Crowther, saw two heavily armed men in bush dress coming full pelt towards the house. The detective immediately stepped outside and aiming his colt revolving carbine, dropped the leading horse with a bullet straight through the heart.
Re-cocking the weapon, he fired again, this time wounding the mount of the second rider. By [this] time the first rider had scrambled to his feet, unholstered his Colt Navy revolver and drawn a bead on the person who had un-horsed him. Luckily at the last moment he recognised Jaggers, thereby preventing a shoot-out between the two parties.
The Marengo correspondent of the Yass Courier, when reporting the incident, made the following comment - "The mistake was a natural on considering it was the grey light of early morning, in what would truthfully be termed 'the enemy's country'. The writer added that the incident "error though it was, spoke well for the zeal of the police and showed they were not Feather heros."
...
Then on the 29th January,1865 John and four constables located four of his gang on the farm of George Cramp, near Binda. The gang got away, however, when a lookout posted to watch the approach to the farm, raised the alarm after spotting the police. George Cramp was arrested for harbouring criminals and a month or so later Ben Hall and some of his companions were captured.
Not long after the capture of Ben Hall, John Booral retired from the police force, married Jane Agnes Hearne at Carcoar on 2nd March,1865 and took up farming at Trunkey Creek, where their three children were born prior to John's accidental death on 7th April,1870.

Death notice in the Goulburn Herald & Chronicle, dated Wednesday April 13th, 1870:

"TUENA OBITUARY:- We regret to chronicle the death, by a most distressing accident of Mr Jaggers, son-in-law of Mr Hearne, of Salisbury. I am informed that the deceased was driving his team, laden with slabs, which unhappily struck against a stump, turning over on Mr Jaggers. No help being near, the deceased's wife, who perchance happened to be with him ran off to the nearest place, a quarter of a mile, where the assistance only a young female could be obtained, and who with great presence of mind on arriving at the spot, immediately cut a sapling and prized the dray up sufficiently to extricate the body, not before, we are pained to state, life was extinct."
