Biography

Charles Edwin Jacobs[1] was born in New York on June 15, 1907. This date is established by several documents including Passenger Lists and the US Social Security Death Index.[1][2][3] In 1926 his father filed a petition for Naturalization, on it he lists the date as June 25, but Charles used the 15th.[4]

In 1910 Charles was living with his family on Lewis St. in Manhattan. The census shows that his father was a tailor, spoke Yiddish and immigrated in 1892. His mother's name Celia. Charles has an older sister, Rose.[5][6]

In 1920 the family was living in Manhattan. Max was an operator for coats. Rosie was a finisher of dresses. Max and Clara are shown as having imigrated in 1902 from Austria and their mother tongue was German.[7]

In June 1925 the family was living on 52 Sheriff St. Charles and his brother Louis were students. Their sister Rose was working doing bead crochet.[8]

In 1926, Charles's father, Max, filed a Petition for Naturalization. Max's signature next to the "sign here" x marks shows that, although literate, he was unfamiliar with writing in English. The document was witnessed by Isidore Jacobowitz, a retail cigar dealer, and Louis Isaacs, a tailor. The document identifies his wife and his seven children, born in New York with their dates of birth (not necessarily correctly). Max was working as a tailor and the family lived at 52 Sheriff St., New York.[4]

In 1930 Charles had completed his studies and was working as a lawyer in private practice. He was living with his sister and her husband, Rose and Isidore Jacobowitz on Monterey St. in the Bronx. Charles now uses the last name Jacobs. The earlier records all have Jacobowitz.[9] In the early 1930's, and before marrying in 1936, Charles was able to do some traveling aboard steamships. From those Passenger lists we find that he lived at 1467 College Avenue in the Bronx in 1933 and 1934.

Charles married Harriet Yetta Flug,[1] daughter of Harry and Fannie (Szuch) Flug on Nov. 9, 1936 in Kings County, New York.[10][11] After their wedding, the bride and groom resided at 150 Clarke Place in the Bronx.

By April of 1940, Charles was a practicing lawyer, married with one child and living in the building at 50 Lenox Road in Brooklyn, New York. See the image for that 1940 Federal Census at right, (which you can click on to enlarge). The Charles E. Jacobs family occupies the first three lines on that page.[12][13] Six years later Charles was still practicing law, and was self-employed.[1] He was described as being a 5'5" tall white male, weighing 138 pounds, with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair.

[1] His only obvious characteristic was that he wore glasses.[1] Although an earlier record was marked with an "X," which usually indicates a lack of ability to write; Charles could clearly sign his own name.

Charles died on June 23, 1989,[2] and was buried in New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon.[3] His Hebrew name was Yechzechiel ben Menachum.[3] [14]
